Thoughts of Schwartz

Michael

Many are the strings to the bows of Hazel and Michael Schwartz. From the self-discovery arising from a visit to the grasslands of Inner Mongolia, to the quiet dignity of classical literature, and even to the frantic roar of a racing-car engine, Hazel and Michael offer their experiences, their views and above all their knowledge and expertise.

So scroll down, or to convey the Mediterranean atmosphere they so enjoy, cast off from the Mediterranean jetty, to visit some of the most beautiful territories in the world. Right here, on Hazel and Michael's site, are the azure seas, the all-too-often desolate ruins of great civilisations, and the always hospitable and vibrant peoples of the Eastern Mediterranean. Michael is a linguist who can count twenty visits to this area – not to mention fluent Modern Greek and a tourist Turkish which unlocks the magic of that country's cuisine. Oh, and he can teach you Modern Greek.

Hazel appreciates the fine arts. Daughter of artist Ruth Roland, who sculpted Northern England's artistic icon L H Lowry, Hazel was an abstract painter and, in more recent days, a photographer fully exploiting the textures, shades and colors of Toronto. Her collages continually encapsulate this modern, bustling and yet compassionate and very friendly and welcoming city.

For over thirty years, Michael has worked in publishing. After many happy years with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors where he specialized in mapping and minerals, Michael, shall we say, sank even lower (literally) as he wrote about the global coal industry. Spells with online and print magazines in the telecoms sector followed. Now Michael is a freelancer exploiting his rich seam of mining knowledge but also writing for a local newspaper and as a classical music reviewer.

And then, amidst the culture and the artistic finery, there lurks an interest in mechanical matters. Hazel roared along dirt tracks in Australia as a rally-driver.

She had also done a lot of navigating but she prefers to be behind the wheel especially anywhere to which has the word can be applied, and preferably on a rough dirt road out in the Australian Outback. She even competed in the 1980 Castrol GTX car rally.

Michael acquired his first motor racing library book in 1966 – and chalked up a creditable score on this subject on BBC's Mastermind.

Oh, yes. And there is the controversial world of politics. Forever changing, perhaps not as noble or moral as we would like but never to be ignored. Public service as an elected councillor and a UK general election candidature underpin Hazel and Michael's knowledge, above all, of the European Union – don't start us on that one but do read our comments.

And enjoy our site.
